Prayer for the First Day of Class by Dr. James Arnt Aune

내 논문 심사 위원 중의 한분이었던 어니 교수가 왜 세상을 등졌는지는 아직 알려진 바가 없다.  나로서는 여전히 이해가 가진 않지만...지난 주 일요일, MSC빌딩에서 그를 기억하는 모임에 다녀왔다.  내가 추억하는 그의 모습은 담담한 편이다.  이 곳 볼튼 건물이  아담하고 그 주변이 아늑해서 가끔 그 곳 벤치에 일부러 찾아가 담배를 피곤 했는데, 그도 나와서 콜라 캔을 들고 담배 피는 모습을  몇 번 본적이 있더랬다. 그의 수업을 듣고 논문 준비로 만나고 그가 권한 몇 권의 책을 읽었지만, 그냥 그 장면이 인상에 남는다. 유대교 신자인 그는 God 쓸 때 경외하는 마음으로 글자 그대로 적지 않고 중간에 x를 써서 Gxd라고 썼던 기억도 난다. 나의 질문을 좋게 봐 줬던 그는 맑스를 좋아하고 합리적이며 상식을 중시하는 수사학자였다. 그의 명복을 빈다.

You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then -  to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wag it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learningn is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn."
