이상과 현실의 사이에서

 겨울 학기도 끝나 방학이라 좀 쉴 겸 설도 쇨 겸 고향에 내려왔다. 우연히 밀(John Stuart Mill)의 자서전이 서가에 보여 무심코 집어 들었는데 인덱스를 붙인 쪽지가 보인다. 전에도 말했지만 진실을 말하기truth-telling와 관련 고백적 글쓰기라는 스타일에 관심이 조금 있다. 가장 진솔하면서도 가장 회의주의적인 태도를 볼 수 있는 글쓰기가 고백적, 자전적 글쓰기가 아닐까 하는 생각이다. 제 3장인 "Education and Self-education" 후반부를 읽었다. 그는 아버지의 힘으로 동인도 회사에 취직하고 그 밑에서 무역 관련 서류업무를 담당하는 "Examiner"라는 직을 얻게 되었다 한다

읽은 부분만 조금 얘기하자면, 자신인 원하는 이상적인 글을 쓰고, 그에 어울릴 만한 직업을 갖는다는 것이 얼마나 힘든가를 토로한다. 생계를 위한 잡문을 쓰는것에서 잠시 벗어나 자기 글을 쓴다는 것이 얼마나 힘든지, 그게  참 기운 빠지고 피곤한 ("enervating and fatiguing") 일인가 말이다. 서기로 일하면서 어려서 기대했던 법률가로서 공적영역에 나서지 못하는 것에 대한 아쉬움이 있긴 하지만 한편으론 런던에 국한된 삶의 협소함을 탈피하여 자신이 휴가 때 마다 도보로 유럽 각지를 돌아다닌 일을 서술한다. 걷는 걸 무척 좋아했던 사람인가 보다. 김우창 선생의 논문을 보면 월리스 스티븐스 시인도 그런 사람이었다던데, 음, 나도 조금 그렇다. 아무튼, 뒤이어서 이렇게 말한다. 

I am disposed to agree with what has been surmised by others, that the opportunity which my official position gave me of learning by personal observation the necessary condition of the practical conduct of public affairs, has been of considerable value to me as a theoretical reformer of the opinions and institutions of my time. 

생계를 위해 택한 일을 후회하지 않는다. 그리고 실무자로서 익힌 삶의 이치를 이론적 삶에 적용한다. 그리하여 다음과 같이 이 장을 마무리한다. "본질적인 것"을 지키기 위한 삶의 겸허한 태도를 다시 읽는다. 

...while I became practically conversant with the difficulties of moving bodies of men, the necessities of compromise, the art of sacrificing the non-essential to preserve the essential.  I learnt how to obtain the best I could, when I could not obtain everything; instead of being indignant or dispirited because I could not have entirely my own way, to be pleased and encouraged when I could have the smallest part of it; and when even that could not be, to bear with complete equanimity the being overruled altogether. I have found, through life, these acquisition to be of the greatest possible importance for personal happiness, and they are also a very necessary condition for enabling any one, either as theorist or as practical man, to effect the greatest amount of good compatible with his opportunities.
